HITS Daily Double – Interview with Frank DiLeo – Michael Jackson’s Manager

July 31st, 2009

HITS Daily Double has a great interview with Frank DiLeo, former (and recently re-appointed) Manager of Michael Jackson.

It’s an excellent interview that dispels many myths and gives some graphic detail about the days leading up to and after MJ’s untimely demise.

Meanwhile, the kids were all there, in another room. I had to go in with a doctor and a social worker to tell them what happened. And those are two things I never, ever want to do again. Excuse me a minute, I might cry here. Let me get a sip of water

Essential reading.

Michael Schumacher – Return of the King – Part II

July 30th, 2009

Michael Schumacher, one of the greatest sportsmen of all time, is making a sensational return to Formula 1.

After the horrific accident at the Hungaroring, when a piece of debris (a suspension coil) struck Felipe Massa’s helmet at over 220kmh, Schumacher will step into the driver’s seat for the next race – the European Grand Prix in Valencia – and may well complete the season for lo Scuderia Ferrari.

The tifosi are going nuts – this is HUGE news.  Forza Felipe, Forza Schumi, Forza Ferrari!

Do you email? Why?

July 29th, 2009

According to the kids at Nielsen, email is still the primary activity for people online.  But my question – how many emails, or more accurately, how many email addresses do people have?

I have four.  One for personal emails, one as a subscription (spam) address, one as a mailing list address, and one for those big emails that arrive from friends late at night (wink, wink).

Oh, and my “work” email too.  Five email addresses.

It really helps me manage the ridiculous amount of emails I get every day, by getting the person to send the email to filter before I even have to.

My question – are email accounts on the increase?  Or are you accessing information in different ways?  Are RSS feeds (by their nature, subscription, or “pull” technology) leading to lower subscription rates for emails?  Are EDMs suffering?  Are you stockpiling emails, and then opening them in a big “binge” once a week, or month?  Do you use Facebook email instead of standard email?  Do you use YouSendIt.com or filesharing to overcome file size restrictions on emails?

So many questions.  Any answers?  What do you do?

Nathan Buckley – Return of the King – Live Chat!

July 28th, 2009

The media is filled with stories of Nathan Buckley’s return to Collingwood – as assistant coach under Mick Malthouse for the next two years (before presumably taking on the head role in 2012).  I, for one, am rapt that the club has landed Bucks, but at this point, I’m a bit baffled as to how it will work.

The Club are covering the media conference live on their site (at 11:00am), using CoverItLive.com – the live chat software. Simultaneously, the Herald-Sun will be covering the media conference live on their site, using CoverItLive also…

If this isn’t a perfect example of how any company can be a media company, I don’t know what is.  Any company can use this software to communicate directly with stakeholders.  Politicians should be using live chat to speak to constituents.  CFOs and CEOs should be using live chat for analysts “calls”, FMCG companies should be providing thought leadership by allowing public access to the makers of the product – getting direct feedback.  There is almost no limit to the applications possible with live chat.  Immediate, simple and FREE!

[UPDATE 10:59am: The Age has a live video stream of the event!]

I spoke at the Insights Exchange Social Media lunch yesterday…

July 22nd, 2009

Here are two reviews of the presentations:

Highlights from the Social Media Strategies Lunch | Online Business Adviser

[UPDATE 7:06pm] Neerav Bhatt logged the Twitter conversations on Coveritlive here.

My two bobs worth:

Aisha Hilary, Communications Specialist, New Media and Brand, SBS and
Chris Noble, General Manager, World Nomads

…are both very shmart cookies, who are doing excellent work in-house with their brands.

Kate Leaman (my former client at Foster’s) has jumped into the social media deep end at Foster’s and is planning some amazing stuff for the Aussie icon – she’s a true advocate for social media and completely “gets it”.

It’s so great to see “real” social media people out there – head down, bum up, working in the space and getting great results for their businesses.

RIP Michael Jackson, Part II (Flash Mobs in Sweden)

July 9th, 2009

Flash mobs are seemingly spontaneous gatherings of people in a certain place at a certain time – and the groups tend to do something.  Generally nothing.  Sometimes funny stuff.

In honour of the passing of Michael Jackson, the following flash mobs in Stockholm…  Well – watch it for yourself.  I got goosebumps watching it – there’s not a single artist in the world that could inspire such a fantastic sight.

Twit-hype – Half of Twitter have never Tweeted!

July 8th, 2009

This from Marketing Charts: Half of Twitter Has Never Tweeted.

So…  60% of people on Twitter abandon it after the first month.

And now we find that half of the people on Twitter have never tweeted.  Furthermore,

80% of users failed to provide a homepage URL
76% have not entered a bio in their profile (vs. 20% last year)
69% have not specified a location

And we know that Twitter is for old people – people under 24 are not on Twitter.

We have seen media events broken via Twitter – or is it that the media focussed on Twitter as an additional story hook?  Is it that Twitter’s limited 140 character capacity is forcing participants to provide brief and rapid updates – rather than longer, less frequent updates?  Which is better?

So – what’s the future of Twitter?  Is it a tool for media people to keep in touch with each other?  Is it for self-promoting nobs?  Or will it evolve to become something largely useful, rather than just a handful of interesting things between tweets about quality sandwiches / coffees / weather?

RIP Michael Jackson, Part I

July 7th, 2009

Hi all,

I haven’t had time to write up a proper reflection on the death of the greatest entertainer to have ever lived, Michael Jackson.  He is worthy of a deep and thorough analysis.

In the meantime, here’s a site that I f*cking love, www.eternalmoonwalk.com.

Check it out – user generated content that adds great value.

And if you want to have a virtual chat with Michael, visit one of my favourite sites, the Michael Jackson SoundBoard.
